Opening weekend saw great crowds at venues in Seattle, LA, Portland and Orlando. And at first glance, the total growth compared to opening weekend in 2015 was positive. Yes, a 1.22 percent combined increase over 10 games seems minor, but for such a young league, growth is growth.
Looking closer, there are a few important notes we can glean:
– The new teams continue to carry the league in attendance
– Vancouver was the only club to increase attendance on opening day, compared to 2015
– Despite a promise from executives to sell out every game in 2016, FC Dallas couldn’t even increase attendance compared to 2015
– The 1.22 percent growth from 2015 to 2016 is largely a benefit of DC United’s poor showing in 2015
